JULIA CRYSTAL GLASS FACTORY IN PIECHOWICE – CRYSTAL WORKS OF ART
The walls of the Julia crystal glass factory of Piechowice are marked with fine tradition and 200 years of history. The factory is now the only surviving relic of great traditions of glass-making in this part of the Karkonosze mountains and the only living monument of the Josephine Glassworks situated within old walls of Fritz Heckert’s glass factory. Thanks to their exceptional value, crystal products manufactured here are highly recognised for instance in the USA and Saudi Arabia. Let us then take a closer look at them.

WACHLARZ PASSED AWAY
Sad news have reached us from Michałów. Wachlarz (Arbil - Warsowia/Tallin), bred by SK Michałów, , passed away at the age 27. He was a sire with great merit for Polish breeding, a representative of one of the oldest Polish blood lines, of the stallion Krzyżyk or.ar. Before being accepted for breeding he successfully passed the performance test at the race track. At present his son, the stallion Forman out of Formia by Gazal Al Shaqab, occupies the leading sire’s stall in the Michałów stud.
UAE - ABU DHABI DAY AT THE SŁUŻEWIEC RACE COURSE IN WARSAW
On Sunday (20 August) the Warsaw Race Course at Służewiec hosted a festival of Arabian horse lovers. We could watch the rivalry between Arabian horses in as many as nine races. The footing unfortunately was far from ideal, heavy rain made the ground too soft, even puddles could be seen in places. The first race of the day, for 3 year old pure bred Arabians, was for the Amael Prize. Our AHCII Institute was the sponsor of the race. The cup was presented by the President of the Management Board, Łukasz Łuniewski, and was given to the bay stallion Medium (Nicolas – Mercedes/Sarmata) bred and owned by A. Wójtowicz. The stallion, trained by Piotr Piątkowski, was ridden by jockey A. Reznikow. The most important race of the day was of course the Europe Prize, an international race for 4 year old and older horses. 6 contestants were entered.
AL KHALEDIAH EUROPEAN ARABIAN HORSE FESTIVAL IN NOWE WROŃSKA 2017
The fourth edition of the Al Khalediah European Arabian Horse Festival in Nowe Wrońska took place on 18 – 20 August. From its first edition the show enjoys a great deal of interest, the same being true this year with 91 horses appearing in the ring. The show’s popularity is no doubt a result of the unceasing efforts of the organizers, who are „bending over backwards” to satisfy even the most discerning visitors. As every year, this year they also prepared something new. The change was in the prizes. Cars, previously given to the Championship winners, were now replaced by cash. Thus gold medalists received PLN 30 thousand, silver medalists PLN 20 thousand and bronze medalists PLN 10 thousand. The horses placed among the first five in the class were awarded PLN 4 thousand each. This prize system reduced the differences between the medalists, which were quite considerable during the previous editions of the show. The total prize money, including the Sunday race, was PLN 683 500. During the three previous editions of the Festival we were spoilt by beautiful weather, which never left Nowe Wrońska during the show. This year however it proved much more fickle. The Friday classes took place under relatively favourable skies, while Sunday was a real race against rain, with the program being slightly altered to avoid the downpour, which nonetheless proved unavoidable. The Michałów Stud had the most reasons for celebration, its horses winning two gold medals and one silver and bronze each, as well as the unanimous verdict of Best in Show. Four gold medals, five silver and five bronze went to private breeders from Poland and abroad. The golden sponsor, for the fourth time and from the beginning of the Festival, was our Institute, the Arabian Horse Culture International Institute AHCII. We also sponsored the 7 years old and older mares class. Our partners, Huta Julia, the law firm DKK Dziedzic, Kowalski, Kornasiewicz and Partners and the Rad-Pol furniture company were among the silver sponsors.
NOW WE NEED A DIALOGUE
Referring to the text "Failure of the Janów Podlaski auction. What now?”, which has just appeared on our website and which seems to contain a very apt description of the auction in Janów Podlaski, I would like to elaborate on the issue suggested by the second part of the title. What now?
FAILURE OF THE AUCTION IN JANÓW PODLASKI – WHAT NOW?
„God took a handful of south wind and made a horse, tying goodness and good fortune to a lock of mane above its forehead to make it fly without wings”, says an old Arab legend. Has that good fortune left Polish Arabian horses? Will they still be able to fly to the sky without wings? We need to wait for an answer, although this year’s disaster of the „Pride of Poland” auction does not fill anyone with optimism. In line with the announcements of grand celebrations of the 200th anniversary of the Janów Podlaski Stud the event was “grand”, but the fireworks were not of the kind that the organizers, and most of all Arabian horse lovers, were hoping for. The 410 thousand Euro is not a sum achieved for one horse, as we would have thought several years ago, but the total price obtained at the auction for the sale of 6 out of 25 horses offered for sale. And although the Arabian Horse Festival is also (or most of all) the National Championship, it remained deeply in the shadow of the unfortunate Sunday auction. The atmosphere seemed the same as usual, characteristic of Janów, and yet it was totally different. Already starting from Friday things were not easy. The tropical temperatures proved a nuisance for the horses, the presenters as well as the guests. Maybe that was the reason for the empty stands? On Sunday we could somehow breathe a sigh of relief, but the black rain clouds handing over Janów remained till the end.
SMALL SURPRISES AND GREAT REASONS FOR JOY – ARABIAN JUNIOR SPRING SHOW IN BIAŁKA
The show season in Poland is to be considered begun. For many years the Junior Show in Białka has been the forerunner of the approaching season. Białka is the first opportunity for breeders to get together and compete, to draw conclusions and verify whether the raised horses will join the „top trendy” group. This is where young horses have their début and the first stars, which we then see on the red carpet in Paris for instance, are born. The greatest winners of this year’s show are the Michałów Stud and the Suweco Stud. The owner, Nina Suskevicova, will certainly remember the show. In the 11 classes held horses from Michałów won 7 victories, while Janów and Białka only one each. Two class wins went to horses from private studs. The Sunday championships brought more triumph for Michałów horses, as well as an astonishing turn of events. The Ground Jury, composed of Marc Veray from France, Christine Jamar-Demeersseman from Belgium, Gideon Reisel from Holland and Tomasz Tarczyński from Poland judged 112 horses. Scores above 90.00 points were awarded to as many as 50 horses. The highest awarded score was 94.17 points, which was given to a state stud mare.

INAUGURATION OF THE NEW RACING SEASON AT SŁUŻEWIEC ON SUNDAY
This Sunday, 23 April, at 14.00, the new 73rd season will be inaugurated, and this year it will last until 19 November. On the first day 8 races will take place, for which 64 horses have been entered. Traditionally before the first race the famous „Ruuuszyły…” [„And off they go…..”] will be heard, and the spectators will hear the evergreen hit by Jarema Stempowski, „Bomba w górę”. After that the spectators’ attention will concentrate only on the main actors of the show, that is the horses and the jockeys riding them. After the winter break the enthusiasts of this royal sport will have full 54 emotional racing days in front of them at the Warsaw race course, Służewiec. A total of 452 races have been planned for 2017: 268 races for thoroughbreds, 163 for Arabians and 20 for French trotters. The total prize money will slightly exceed PLN 8 million. The most interesting events of the 2017 season will certainly be the Opening (23 April), Ruler’s Prize (21 May), Derby Gala (2 July), Lira/Oaks Prize (30 July), the Arabian Day (20 August), St. Leger (28 August) and Wielka Warszawska [Warsaw Grand Prix] (24 September).
GOLD FUERTE AND SILVER NORMA AT THE INTERNATIONAL SHOW IN DUBAJU DIAHC
Polish horses put up a great performance at the International Horse Show in Dubai (DIAHC) on 16 – 18 March 2017. Horses bred both by state as well as private studs firmly marked their presence. The most prominent winner was the stallion Fuerte (Shanghai EA - Frymuszka/Ekstern) bred by Jan Dobrzyński and owned by Sami Ben Saad, who won the gold medal in the Junior Stallions’ Championship. In his class of 3-year old stallions Fuerte came first with a score of 93.10 points. Another medal, silver this time, was awarded to Michałów’s Norma (Gazal Al Shaqab - Nina/Monogramm), who thus became the Vice-Champion of Senior Mares. The title of Champion was granted to FT Shaella ( Shael Dream Desert - Soul Pretty TGS) owned by the Dubai Arabian Horse Stud. Norma actually won in the 10-year old mares’ class but did not manage to keep the position in the ultimate contest. Another mare raised in Michałów also competed in this class, Pistoria (Gazal Al Shaqab – Palmira/Monogramm), who finally came fourth. In the 4 – 6 year olds mares’ class the fourth place was also awarded to Clarissima (Esparto – Calineczka/ Metropolis NA) bred by Marek Kondrasiuk. The fifth place in the 10 year old stallions’ class was given to the Michałów-bred stallion Drabant (Gazal Al Shaqab – Demona/Monogramm).

GREAT PEOPLE ALWAYS PASS AWAY TOO SOON - ROMAN PANKIEWICZ 1924 - 2016
Roman Pankiewicz, an unsurpassable authority on Arabian horse breeding and history, a man with an unusual sense of humour, passed away on 6 December at the age of 92. The story of his life abounded in events that could easily make up half a dozen biographies. Roman Pankiewicz was born in 1924 in Kapłanowice. He and his mother were deported to Siberia in 1940 – 1946. After returning to Poland he graduated from the Agricultural University in Olsztyn and in 1951 started work at the State Horse Stud in Albigowa, which became the birthplace of the stallion he bred, which changed the course of history. Since then nothing was the same.
THERE WEREN'T ANY SURPRISES - WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP IN PARIS 2016
We need not emphasize that the World Horse Championship in Paris is one of the highest ranking Arabian horse shows. The contestants include horses and breeders who are likely to be the trendsetters in the near future. This year horses from Janów and those of private breeders were not represented. Only the Michałów team appeared in Paris. Polish horses won the highest awards on numerous occasions, displaying their top quality. And although the quality of Polish horses remains (still) the same, the results of this year’s Championship can hardly surprise. Already after the Cup of Nations in Aachen it was clear what is to be expected in Paris. Five ladies from Michałów: Emanolla (Vitorio TO - Emandoria/Gazal Al Shaqab), EL Larinera (Empire - El Emeera/Ekstern), Galerida (Shanghai E.A. - Galilea/Laheeb), Pustynia Kahila (Kahil Al Shaqab - Pustynna Malwa/Ekstern) and Emmona (Monogramm - Emilda/Pamir) were responsible for representing our country. Three returned with Top Ten titles, none could hope for a medal in the finals.
EQUATOR - VICE CHAMPION OF US SENIOR STALLIONS!
It is a pleasure indeed to share this information! During this years’ US Championship in Tulsa the Michałów bred 6 years old stallion Equator (QR Marc - Ekliptyka/Ekstern), leased by the Qatar Aljassimya Stud Farm, won the title of Vice Champion of Senior Stallions. It must be emphasized that the stallion also won his class in great style. Equator won very high scores for type (3x”20”) and movement (4x”20”), consequently the total score of 401.5 points turned out to be unbeatable. The highest title in the Championship was awarded to the stallion MARAJJ (Marwan Al Shaqab - RGA Kouress/Kouvay Bey). An additional Polish accent was the title won by Białka’s Perfirka (Gazal Al Shaqab - Perforacja/Ernal). The mare won the title of Senior Mares Champion in the amateur category leaving all rivals behind.
ALL ROADS LEAD TO … KRAKÓW? I KRAKÓW ARABIAN HORSE FESTIVAL
The sunny, even hot weekend (09.09 – 11.09) spent at the Kraków Race Course in Buczków is now behind us. The occasion was the I Kraków Arabian Horse Festival, which comprised two events. On Friday and Saturday pure-bred Arabians competed for the title of most beautiful horse of the show ring. On Sunday the competition moved to the race track. The organizer of the event was Ms Anna Stojanowska and the directors, until recently, of the Janów Stud, Mr Marek Trela, and Michałów Stud, Mr Jerzy Białobok. One of the main attractions consisted of three new classes: foals, geldings and amateur presenters. The list of sponsors included the AL Thumama Stud from Qatar, Halsdon Arabians of Ms Shirley Watts, Al Zobair Stud of the United Arab Emirates, Lutetia Arabians from France, Suweco Stud from the Czech Republic and Polish studs, Silvatica Black Arabians and M Arabians. Invitations to judge were accepted by Christine Jamar-Demeerseeman from Belgium, Claudia Darius from Germany, Gianmarco Aragno from Italy and Jaroslav Lacina from the Czech Republic. This year’s show did not have a ECAHO affiliation but was held in accordance with ECAHO regulations. The smiling audience, efficient organization, ultra-hospitable course designers, and most of all, beautiful Arabian horses, made the debut of the show a great success. Let us now have a look at what happened in the show ring.
EQUESTRIAN ENDURANCE RIDING – THE UNFAILING ARABIANS
During the Equestrian Endurance Ride which took place on 2 – 3 September in Malichów in the Opole region pure-bred Arabians proved that they are not only porcelain figures but flesh and blood, and of the best variety! The Dolina Gawora Stables run by Mr Marek Tul was the organizer of this year’s Polish Seniors Championship, Polish Juniors Championship and an International Endurance Competition (CEI 2*), as well as a National and Non-affiliated competition. The event met with considerable interest as the number of entered combinations was over 70! Arabian horses clearly proved to be infallible.
AL KHALEDIAH EUROPEAN ARABIAN HORSE FESTIVAL - FOR THE THIRD TIME
It is for the third time that the Polish AKF Stud organized the International Class B Show. And for the third time Nowe Wrońska welcomed us with wonderful weather (the organizers had to make a special effort as this summer was very capricious), great music, efficient organization, and most importantly, Arabian horses of the highest world quality. The guests of the Festival are likely to remember the outstanding performance of the snow-white, magical AJA Angelo and exquisite, bay AJ Sawari for a long time. The main prizes for winning the title of Champion were various models of Ford cars (B-Max, Kuga, Ranger). Vice-Champions and bronze medalists received prize money (PLN 8 thousand and 6 thousand respectively). The owner of the “Best in Show” additionally received PLN 15 thousand. Prize money of PLN 4 thousand was also given to the owners of horses which won places 1 – 5 in the individual classes. There was a great deal to be won and we saw as many as 106 contestants in the ring! As in previous years this year also our Arabian Horse Culture International Institute (AHCII) Foundation was the golden sponsor of the Festival. In addition we also sponsored prizes in the yearling colts class. The prizes were presented to the winners by Łukasz Łuniewski, President of the Management Board
Polish horses appeared to be somewhat overshadowed by their foreign rivals, but it must be admitted the level was very high. Among Polish horses the stallion Fuerte (owned by Sami Ben Saad) bred by Mr Jan Dobrzański won the highest title. All the other titles and the cars went to the Ajman Stud, Germany (Gestüt Osterhof) and Egypt (Al Baydaa Stud). The Ajman Stud definitely set the level of competition and a representative of the stud also won the Best in Show title.
XXXVIII NATIONAL PURE-BRED ARABIAN HORSE SHOW – INFAMOUS RECORDS OF THE PRIDE OF POLAND 2016 AUCTION
This year's Pride of Poland auction passes into history as a record one, but it is not financial records we have in mind. Although permanent guests remember auctions several years ago when the financial result was at a similar level, this year’s event cannot be assessed only in terms of achieved revenues. This year Janów saw a record in the number of unsold horses (16 out of the 31 on offer), there was record media interest and a record number of spectators. Ticket sales for the Sunday auction ended already on Saturday morning with all the seats. It was clear that many people were in Janów for the first time, and that they heard about Arabian horses only recently. In fact it was difficult not to hear about Arabians over the past several months as the media continue to bring up the topic of the dismissal of the Directors of the Janów and Michałów Studs. It must be admitted that Polish Arabian breeding received a great deal of advertizing, but is this the kind of promotion it needed? The events which took place during the auction overshadowed the entire Arabian Horse Festival, which apart from the auction also (or primarily) comprises the National Pure-Bred Arabian Championship. Let us start from the beginning.

EQUATOR’S UNANIMOUS VICTORY – SCOTTSADLE 2016
The prestigious show in Scotsdale, Arizona (11 – 21 February) was a great success for Equator. The Michałów-bred stallion stormed in to win the title of Senior Stallions Champion! The Scottsdale show is one of the most prestigious and most important horse shows in the world. This year it took place for the 61st time. In the Sunday competition the stallion, leased by Aljassimya Farm since December, had no equals.
2015 WORLD CHAMIONSHIP IN PARIS
It was the 35th time that the international crème de la crème of pure-bred Arabians was hosted in Paris. The World Championship took place on 27 – 29 November as part of the Salon du Cheval. The best among the best faced each other to compete for the highest awards. There were marvelously moving moments as well as disappointments. Torrential applause as well as surprising decisions of the jury. Like every year spectators waited for the entry of the dragon, the horse that would sway the public. This time could be no different. Michałów’s Equator (QR Marc – Ekliptyka/Ekstern) took possession of the arena and raised our hopes for victory. However, the highest podium was not for him. This time Al Jazeera and Pustynia Kahila were also eclipsed by the gold Morion and beautifully moving Equator.
FAREWELL TO PIANISSIMA - piano means quiet…
This year unfortunately does not spare us bad news, hiting us with great force and causing immense pain. On 19 October we lost Pianissima (Gazal Al Shaqab – Pianosa/ Eukaliptus). An exceptional mare, bred in Janów, which became a legend already during her lifetime.
Pianissima was foaled in January 2003 as the first foal of Pianosa and the Qatari stallion Gazal Al Shaqab. From the first moments of her life the unmatched beauty of her little head was absolutely fascinating and sowed a seed of hope for future success in the show ring.
NATIONS’ CUP IN AACHEN
We bring wonderful news straight from Aachen - the Nations’ Cup and the Breeders’ Cup are once again in Polish hands! The XXXIII Nations’ Cup took place during the last weekend of September (25 – 27.09) in the Albert-Vahle-Halle. The Polish team, totally reliable as usual, guaranteed a great deal of emotions also this time. The prize in the Breeders’ Cup, The Major T.W.I. Hedley Memorial Trophy, was awarded to Poland for the sixth time, while the prize in the Nations’ Cup, The Lady Harmsworth Blunt Memorial Trophy, for the ninth.
